Congratulate yourself on making it through the week! Being confined to your home while caring for someone with dementia is far from easy. And you did it! Now take the weekend to try to do something for yourself. Easier said than done? Start small.
- While the person with dementia is watching a tv show or sleeping, read a chapter in that book you’ve been wanting to start.
- Put an exercise show on the tv and follow the moves with the person with dementia or by yourself.
- Download a meditation app on your phone and try meditating at least 5 minutes per day.
- Stay connected with family and friends – a phone call, email, Face Time or Webinar are just a few ways to connect.
- Think of the following statements when the day is getting you down:
“I don’t have to do this alone. I can ask for help.”
“I’m doing the best that I can.”
“I will try to enjoy the successes throughout the day, no matter how small.”
“It’s okay if I cry.”
“It’s okay if he or she is sleeping a lot, as long as I know he or she is healthy and safe.”
“Some things are out of my control.”
“Sometimes small steps are the only way things will work.”
“Any feeling I have is permissible.”
“If I get frustrated, it means I’m human.”
“I am not perfect. No one is.”
- Lastly, look at the ALZNJ telephone support group schedule and register for a group. It’s a great way to connect with others who may have similar feelings and experiences.
Remember: caring for yourself gives you strength to care for others.
