Kristin Davie (caregiver)
My mother developed Alzheimer’s in my early twenties – that definitive decade where children and parents begin to better understand each other and when many major life moments (new jobs, new relationships, new homes) are typically enjoyed. I’ll never be able to call my mother and tell her about my promotion or call her for a Thanksgiving recipe or incorporate her in my wedding. Sometimes the hole I feel in my life without her is large, and sometimes the smaller moments sneak up and sadden me more. No matter, it’s an everyday loss, complicated in a much more cruel way because she is, in fact, still here – just not in the way we knew her or need her.
